Retiling a bathroom in the Orlando area typically costs $8,000 to $18,000 in 2026 for the floor and the shower walls together. Retiling only the shower walls in a standard 5 ft tub/shower alcove runs about $4,000 to $10,000, including demolition, cement board, waterproofing and mid-range tile. Tile installation itself, labor and materials together, runs $15 to $40 per square foot for ceramic and porcelain, more for mosaics, large-format tile and natural stone. Below are the costs by area of the bathroom, by size, and by tile type, plus what is included and what is not.
Retiling bathroom cost at a glance
Typical Orlando-area planning ranges for 2026, installed (labor plus materials). They vary with size, tile choice, what is behind the old tile, and permit scope, and a written estimate after measuring is the only real number.
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Retile a full bathroom (floor and shower walls) | $8,000 to $18,000 |
| Retile shower walls, standard 5 ft tub/shower alcove (demo, cement board, waterproofing, mid-range tile) | $4,000 to $10,000 |
| Tile installation, ceramic or porcelain, labor and materials | $15 to $40 per sq ft |
| Mosaics, large-format tile, natural stone | Above $15 to $40 per sq ft |
| Shower demolition only (if you are rebuilding differently) | $800 to $2,500 |
Cost to retile a bathroom floor
Floor-only retiling is priced mostly by square footage, plus the work around the edges. Simple arithmetic from the tile installation range:
| Floor area | Example room | Tile installation at $15 to $40 per sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| About 25 sq ft | Powder room | About $375 to $1,000 |
| About 40 sq ft | 5x8 guest bath | About $600 to $1,600 |
| About 60 sq ft | Small primary bath | About $900 to $2,400 |
| About 100 sq ft | Larger primary bath | About $1,500 to $4,000 |
Those figures cover the tile installed. On top of that, a floor retile usually includes:
- Removing the old tile and thinset or mortar bed. Older homes with tile set in a thick mortar bed take longer.
- Substrate prep. Most Central Florida bathrooms sit on a concrete slab. Cracks are treated and low spots leveled. Upstairs or older homes with wood subfloors need any soft areas around the toilet and tub replaced.
- Pulling and resetting the toilet with a new wax ring, and sometimes removing and reinstalling the vanity.
- Baseboard or tile base and transitions at the door.
That is why a written estimate for a floor matters more than the per-foot number alone.
Cost to retile a shower
The shower is where most of the money goes in a retile, because it is not just tile. A proper shower retile includes demolition to the studs, new cement board, a waterproofing membrane, tile, grout and caulk, and often a new valve while the wall is open. For a standard 5 ft tub/shower alcove, that typically costs $4,000 to $10,000.
What moves a shower retile up or down:
- Walls only vs walls and floor. Retiling the walls around a tub stays near the lower end. A tiled shower floor means rebuilding the pan, which adds labor and waterproofing.
- Tile to the ceiling, niches and a bench add surface and cuts.
- Tile type. Standard porcelain is the value choice; mosaics and stone take longer to set.
- What is behind the old tile. Many 1980s and 1990s Orlando-area homes have tile over drywall with no waterproofing. If the studs or bottom plate are rotted, water damage repairs often run $2,000 to $8,000 or more.

Cost to retile a full bathroom
Floor plus shower walls together typically runs $8,000 to $18,000. A 5x8 guest bath with a tub surround and a plain porcelain floor sits near the low end. A larger primary bath with a tiled walk-in shower, tile to the ceiling and a patterned floor sits near the top.
Wall tile outside the shower, such as wainscot or a feature wall behind the vanity, is added by area at the same $15 to $40 per sq ft for ceramic and porcelain, plus prep.
Cost by tile type
| Tile | Where it lands | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ceramic | Low end of $15 to $40 per sq ft | Good for walls; softer than porcelain on floors |
| Porcelain | Low to middle of the range | Dense and water resistant; the default for floors and showers |
| Large-format porcelain (24 in. and up) | Above the range | Needs a very flat substrate and more careful setting |
| Mosaic | Above the range | Many joints and slower to set; common on shower floors for slope and grip |
| Natural stone (marble, travertine, slate) | Above the range | Needs sealing and more care, and costs more to install |
Choose slip resistance for floors, especially in the shower. Small mosaics on a shower floor give more grip because of the grout joints.
What is included in a retiling estimate
Ask for a written scope that says:
- Which areas are being retiled (floor, shower walls, shower floor, wainscot).
- Demolition and disposal.
- Backer board and the waterproofing method in the shower.
- Floor prep and leveling.
- Tile and grout type, or the allowance per square foot if not yet selected.
- Trim pieces, niches, bench and edge details.
- Toilet and vanity removal and reset.
- Valve replacement, if any, and permits for plumbing work.
- Caulking, sealing (for stone and some grouts) and cleanup.
Estimates that look far apart often differ on waterproofing and prep. Those are the parts you cannot see afterward and the parts that decide how long the tile lasts.
Retile or remodel?
Retiling is the better value when the vanity, toilet, tub and plumbing are in good shape and in the right place. Once you are also replacing the vanity, fixtures, lighting and glass, a same-layout guest bath remodel, typically $12,000 to $25,000, often costs only a little more than a full retile and gives you a finished room. Our estimated bathroom remodeling costs guide shows those line items side by side.
DIY vs hiring a pro
A floor retile in a small room is a realistic DIY project for an experienced homeowner. Showers are different: the waterproofing, slope and transitions decide whether water stays where it belongs, and mistakes stay hidden until they fail. In homes built before the 1980s, have old tile and adhesive tested for asbestos before removing them.
How long it takes
Floor-only in a small bathroom is often a few days. A shower retile usually takes one to two weeks on site. Floor and shower together take longer, because each layer (backer, waterproofing, thinset, grout) needs cure time. For the full sequence, see our bathroom remodel timeline.
